You couldn’t spend a day at PCCC without getting a hug. I know there has been some controversy about preschool teachers having unnecessary physical contact with their charges but at the Parent Child Care Center, you got hugged. The children hugged the staff, and the staff hugged the children. When a child walked into the center in the morning, we would go out of our way to greet the child and the parent, get the child’s coat or hat hung up, and make certain that he or she felt welcomed. This was a hug I received for my first Valentine’s Day at the center. Each child contributed because on the inside of this homemade card each child used fingerpaint to leave their own personal fingerprint which was labeled with their respective names. I’ve cherished this card all these years.

This was my class. It got bigger as time wore on. We eventually ended up with 25 children in this one class. That was a lot for 3 people to handle, but we got a lot of help from high school kids there with the CETA program and other public service programs. The center’s director, Prescious Thomas, was very good about scouting out help, financing, and grants to keep the center operating. That’s me all the way in the back in the middle. Also in the back row, to your left, is Mrs. Johnson, the teacher aide, and to your right is Mrs. Saunders, the classroom teacher. Jeannine is directly in front of Mrs. Saunders. She and Eureka were dressed alike that day. Jeannine is the one with her mouth open.

This was the class for 2 year olds. It was right next to the area we in the 3 year old class used. The staff members standing in the back row are (from your right) Ms. Butler, teacher aide, and Mr. Johnson, classroom teacher. The woman to your far left is another teacher aide. I remember her but I cannot recall her name. One of these days I’ll track down sopmeone who can tell me. Angela was in this class. She is sitting in the very front row, the second position from the right and the first girl from the right in the front row.
