December 2001 Trip to Washington, D.C.The thing that struck me the most about the DC area during this trip was the prevelence of construction, security, and flags. Flags were everywhere, even hanging from the many windows of the Hart Senate Office Building which was itself still closed and undergoing Anthrax decontamination. The entire Southeast Freway was torn up and receiving a massive and very long overdue rennovation. The traffic circle and accompanying traffic pattern on the Virginia side of Memorial Bridge was radically changed to accomodate construction. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway had large construction projects in both directions. Streets in and around the White House and Capitol Hill were closed with concrete barricades and uniformed police officers and DC National Guard soliders. The roads around the Pentagon were open but constantly protected and surveilled by uniformed police officers and U.S. Army Military Police.
These are the pictures that we took during the visit. Mostly, it's just the pictures and very little narration since my intent is to make the pictures available to those who have asked about them. These pages are rough with no attempt to smooth them out. They're just an attempt to make the pictures available. Any questions about a particular photo may be sent to me via email and are welcome.
